PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) measures the energy efficiency of data centers. The closer this value is to 1.0, the higher the efficiency.
In 2024, the average PUE worldwide is 1.56. The European average in 2020 was 1.46. OVH's average PUE is 1.26 over a period between 2023 and 2024.

Optimizing physical servers
Our servers are designed on a modular basis, with no superfluous chassis, and every unnecessary component is removed as soon as it is custom-built. Server optimization by LRob
At LRob, we know that software optimization can make all the difference. Through a simple and efficient architecture, where every configuration is carefully thought out, we save resources and energy, for maximum performance. The fight against robots in particular saves up to 95% of CPU.
The processor (CPU) is the component that performs all the calculations and consumes the most energy in a server.
How do we reduce CPU load?
This can save up to 100 watts per server at any one time.
It all starts with the fine-tuning of each server software and the rigorous optimization of each website. By caching files, databases and web pages, we significantly reduce load.
But the real stroke of genius comes from our ability to effectively block attacks. Over and above the security benefits for your online services, this approach to reducing processor utilization saves energy and physical machines.
It is estimated that 95% of processor load is saved by these efficient blocking operations. This directly translates into 95% more available resources. For the most heavily-attacked sites from hosts with limited computing resources, the gain in response time is drastic and immediate.

Why complicate things?
The simpler the architecture, the more stable it is, and the greater the energy savings. You don't need a cluster of 15 machines to host a site.

MySQL optimization
For databases, we always use the very latest versions of MariaDB, so we're at the cutting edge of native optimization. What's more, our database servers are optimized to hold databases directly in RAM, with a finely-tuned cache. This drastically speeds up processing and considerably reduces CPU load. Here again, we combine energy savings with performance gains.
Website optimization
A poorly optimized website can use far more resources than necessary. That's why we contact our customers on a case-by-case basis to offer optimization advice. For WordPress, we can even apply these optimization measures directly for you.
In this way, we prevent sites from wasting resources and performance.
Use VPS whenever possible
VPS servers are both economical and ecological, pooling resources while offering excellent availability. That's why all small LRob application and infrastructure servers, such as DNS servers, run on VPS. This delivers more than sufficient performance for lightweight applications, and saves energy.
