Name Servers (NS): How does it work?
NS, or Name Servers (also called Name Servers, or DNS Servers) contain your domain's DNS zone, which will define your domain's IP rules and pointing.
They are called authoritarian for a domain name. They are set by the domain registrar, i.e. the company with which you have registered your domain name (such as Gandi, OVH, GoDaddy, etc.).
How Name Servers work
Your registrar sends the NS to register responsible for domain extension (e.g. theAFNIC for .fr domains). This information enables visitors and Internet services to access the domain correctly.
In general, the NS servers are provided by the registrar, but you can also choose to use third-party NS servers, such as those provided by LRob. This choice is independent of your registrar, giving you complete freedom.
NS Primary and Secondary
A domain generally uses several NS servers to ensure redundancy. There are :
- A NS primary (formerly called master), which contains the main DNS records.
- One or more Secondary NS (formerly called slaves), which replicate data from the primary NS. This ensures that DNS information remains accessible even if the primary NS fails.
Name Servers and DNS Zones
Visit Name Servers are often mentioned in the DNS zonebut they are not authoritarian only if they are defined via the registrar. If you add NS for a subdomainfield, the DNS zone for this sub-domain will be delegated to the specified NS server. This information is also present in the SOA (Start of Authority) of the DNS zone, which contains DNS metadata to manage record synchronization between primary and secondary NS servers.
Visit NS also play a key role in certain services, such as the management of emailsby ensuring that mail servers find the right DNS records.
How to change your Name Servers
If you need to modify Name Servers of your domain, this operation is performed via the interface of your registrar. If you prefer, you can provide access to LRob so we can make the change for you.
Name Servers from LRob
To host your domain on the LRobyou need to define the following Name Servers:
- ns1.lrob.net
- ns2.lrob.net
- ns3.lrob.net
These servers will manage your domain's DNS.
